If it is a closed shape you could use the ‘overcut’ function within the cut settings (Advanced Tab), you specify the distance that the laser will continue past the end of the cut.

Depending on the project type, you can also use lead-in or lead-out to start at a point outside of your object (e.g. if your material would melt strongly when a high-powered beam is ignited).
