How can the origin (0,0) be correctly set on a laser engraver to achieve accurate positioning?

I’ve only been using a laser for a few days and I’m already struggling with positioning and centering my designs. I usually like to set my origin (0,0) at the bottom-left corner of the material because it makes positioning easier for me. I try to line up the laser head as accurately as possible with the corner of the piece, but my engravings still end up shifted to the left.

What’s confusing is that everything looks perfectly aligned in LightBurn, but the actual result on the material doesn’t match what I see on screen.

I’m starting to wonder if I’m setting the origin wrong or missing some important step in the process. Is there a trick to getting the origin set correctly? Also, would adding a crosshair laser actually help with this, or is it not really necessary?

    My method is to first draw a square in the software that matches the size of the material sheet, then nest all the parts inside it. I set the square to a “tool” layer so it doesn’t actually cut—just serves as a registration frame. If a part needs to be recut, I just select that part along with the frame, and I can cut it without messing up the rest.

    Another trick is to tape down a piece of cardboard on the laser bed, cut the part outline, then remove it—now you’ve got a ready-to-go template to drop your real parts in for engraving.

    I’m also using LightBurn, and I have it set to use a custom origin (user origin) with the job starting from the back right corner.

    I like keeping the origin in the back corner because when the cut is done, the laser head moves out of the way, making it super easy to grab the material sheet.

  • The usual trick is to make the parts a little smaller than the material so you don’t have to stress about perfect alignment.
    For even more precise placement, I’ll tape down a little L-shape in the bottom left corner using 2-inch painter’s tape, then engrave the outline of the material. After that, it’s easy to just eyeball the parts into place.

  • Setting the origin at the lower-left corner of the material is correct and generally recommended, but when engraving shifts to the left, the root cause is usually not an incorrect origin setting. It’s more often due to missing mechanical calibration, beam path misalignment, or the software coordinate system not being properly synchronized. A crosshair laser pointer can significantly improve positioning accuracy and is especially helpful for beginners.

  • Ich hab’ oft Teile ausgerichtet, indem ich erst mit niedriger Leistung auf dem Tisch markiert habe. Dann kommt das Werkstück auf die Markierung, und ich weiß genau, wo geschnitten wird.

    Einmal hab’ ich die Griffbrett eines Gitarrenhalses mit den richtigen Bundabständen markiert. Musste das Teil schräg drehen, sonst hätte es nicht in die Maschine gepasst.

    Ich hab einfach Klebeband auf den Tisch geklebt und mit dem Laser markiert. Dann das Griffbrett genau auf die Markierung gelegt und einfach an den Stellen geschnitten, die der Laser markiert hat.

  • It sounds like what you’re really dealing with is a homing issue. Does your machine have homing or limit switches? If not, adding them is highly recommended. Homing switches allow the machine to return to a consistent and repeatable (0,0) position, which gives you a reliable reference point for all positioning and alignment.

    It’s also important to make sure you understand how the coordinate systems work. The “user origin” in LightBurn is only relative to the current starting position—it is not the same as the machine’s true (0,0). If the machine hasn’t homed correctly, even if everything looks perfectly aligned in the software, the actual engraving can still end up shifted, like the left offset you’re seeing.
