Supercontinuum spectrum laser developer SuperLight Photonics has launched the so-called "first revolutionary portable broadband laser" - SLP-1000. Its wide spectral output provides a light source for industrial and medical imaging applications as well as spectroscopy.

Supercontinuum spectrum lasers, also known as broadband lasers, provide high bandwidth while maintaining high coherence and low noise. However, today's industrial solutions are large and heavy, with limited environmental robustness, and require high power, "said the company based in Enschede, the Netherlands.

Its release statement added: "In addition, although they provide a wide range of color bandwidth, the main color is usually prominent, while the relative power levels of other colors are very low. Essentially, they (previous models) are technically broadband.

Portable and compact
The SLP-1000 is a portable broadband laser that features a compact, battery powered, and sturdy design. It weighs only 900 grams (32 ounces) and has a size of less than 1 liter.

SuperLight states that "SLP-1000 is based on the PAD method (i.e. pattern alternating dispersion), providing high-quality, coherent, and stable spectral output (400nm @ -3dB to 1500nm @ -20dB) at a repetition rate of 100MHz in the near-infrared band, with a pulse duration of approximately 20fs.

It integrates seed lasers from Menlo Systems, a supplier of high-precision photonics metrology instruments. The laser output is equipped with Thorlabs compatible threads (SM05), which can be seamlessly integrated with other Thorlabs products.

The company continued, "The SLP-1000 achieved a short pulse duration of approximately 20fs, which also demonstrates the advantage of having an efficient SC generator. Compared to alternative products, the input of these devices can use lower pulse energy; therefore, it can eliminate pulse broadening, amplifier level noise, and other optical components required for amplification.
SLP-1000 also provides high-quality nonlinear pulse compression for applications such as third harmonic surface imaging and transient absorption spectroscopy.

CT Haider Zia commented, "The SLP-1000 is the result of my tenure at the University of Twente, from the spark of ideas to the implementation of industrial products. The industry's demand for portable, high-quality broadband lasers has been ongoing for over a decade.

The laser will be officially launched at the PIC European Photonics Summit in Eindhoven on November 7th and 8th next week.
