Which laser cutting techniques have you found work best for achieving high-precision engravings?

Hi all,

I’ve been trying out different approaches to improve the precision of my laser engravings, and I’d love to hear what’s worked well for others here. Lately, I’ve had good results by slowing down the speed while increasing the power, which helps produce cleaner lines and more detailed engravings. I’ve also noticed that running a quick focus test to make sure the lens is dialed in properly can make a big difference in the final result.

    For me, testing is always the most important thing. Every type of wood behaves differently, and honestly, even wood from the same tree can vary a lot in density and moisture. Just because a test worked on one piece a month ago doesn’t mean it’ll work again today. I almost always do a quick test before committing.

    I’ve also played around with different lenses. To be honest, I haven’t seen a huge difference between them. My newest CO2 machine came with a 1.5" lens, but compared to my usual 2.5", it didn’t suddenly change everything. At least in my experience, lens choice hasn’t been a game changer.

    I do tweak speed and power, but they’re not as critical once you have enough power to begin with. That’s a big difference compared to low-power diode lasers, where settings matter a lot more. If I’ve got plenty of time, I’ll run slower speeds and lower power. If I’m in a rush, I just crank things up and move on.

    On my 100W CO2 machines, a common setup for me is around 400 mm/s at 30% power, or 1000 mm/s at 60%. I also own higher-end CO2 lasers that can technically run several times faster than cheaper mass-produced machines, but honestly? I almost never run them at full speed. I don’t think I’ve ever actually maxed one out, lol.

    Focus adjustment is another underrated trick. My machines have autofocus, but I tried it once and never bothered again. I prefer dialing it in manually. I’ll focus perfectly for fine detail work, or intentionally go a little out of focus for general jobs. I can’t even remember where I first learned that — probably YouTube — but it’s been super useful.

    Fiber lasers are a whole different beast. I’ve been running mine for about 18 months now, and setup takes way more effort. You’re adjusting speed, power, and frequency, and changes actually make a noticeable difference. For example, when engraving slate, lower power gives me a lighter result, while higher power turns it more brown. At least that’s how my machine behaves. Even after a year and a half, I still feel like I’m learning something new with fiber.

  • Run engraving, cutting, and scoring tests on everything. Test each material and every thickness you plan to use. After that, tweak the settings for each test until the results look right. It takes some time, but this is how real experience is built.

    Make sure to label and organize your test pieces so they’re easy to reference later. If you’re using LightBurn, definitely set up a materials/settings library—there’s no need to memorize everything when the software can do it for you.
