In the past few years, paper artists have demonstrated the versatility of their common fiber materials. Some people manually cut or carve paper, while others combine traditional craftsmanship with digital design. Ibbini Studio is in this situation. Abu Dhabi artist Julia Ibni collaborated with computer scientist Stephen Noye to create sculptural paper works inspired by decorative patterns such as antique Persian carpets and Japanese cloisonne vases.

Ibbini has been collaborating with Noyer since 2017 to create increasingly refined works. These designs start with hand drawn elements and are then laser cut onto paper. Although some fragments only have one piece of paper left, others are composed of many cut thin sheets assembled using complex collage methods. This step is always done manually and usually takes hundreds of hours, depending on the scale and complexity of the work.

Some of the works in Ibbini and Noyer's portfolio are so complex that they no longer resemble paper. Through their collage method, they stack enough paper together to make vases and jars. Surprisingly, even when such exquisite media is transformed into sturdy objects, these artworks still possess mesmerizing delicacy in laser cut patterns. The texture of layered paper makes many of these designs look like marble carvings.
