The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Alberta has successfully built a unique innovation ecosystem that integrates outstanding talent, world-class facilities, and local industry partners, aiming to transform Alberta into a comprehensive service center for advanced laser manufacturing.

Called the Canadian Cluster for Laser and Advanced Manufacturing (C:CLAD) — an initiative of the faculty’s Canadian Centre for Welding and Joining — it will support industrial sectors such as oil and gas, mining, agriculture, aerospace, renewable energy and heavy machinery. Sharing the latest advancements in laser cladding, laser heat treatment, automation and digital technologies, it will also contribute to industry codes and standards while championing inclusion.

The cluster will promote collaborative advances in robotics and digital solutions, helping to preserve industrial infrastructure and protect local jobs, as well as expand markets and attract investment for member companies through the centre’s extensive network.

“This initiative will enable industry in Alberta and Canada to access an optimal supply chain, beyond the capabilities of industry alone, sharing a deep understanding of laser technologies and connecting with a global network of partners,” says centre director Patricio Mendez.

With a $1.3-million grant from Prairies Economic Development Canada, C:CLAD will also foster sector-specific professional development, says Mendez.

Around the poles, ice accumulated over millions of years can reach depths of several kilometers. The undisturbed deep ice preserves information about the past. The air bags and particles trapped in the ice tell scientists what the atmosphere used to be like.
