How to measure or calculate the circumferential pulse parameter values for RDWorksV8 rotary engraving?

Gilbert

Step 1: Consult Official Specifications

Obtain accurate parameters from the stepper motor drive or rotary axis manufacturer.

Key Parameters: Stepper motor step angle (e.g., 1.8°), drive microstepping setting (e.g., 16 microsteps), mechanical reduction ratio (e.g., 10:1).

Calculation Formula: Pulses Per Revolution = (360° / Step Angle) × Microstepping × Reduction Ratio

Example: For a system with a 1.8° step angle, 32 microsteps, and a 5:1 reduction ratio, the theoretical Pulses Per Revolution = (360/1.8) × 32 × 5 = 32,000.

Step 2: Verify via Theoretical Calculation

If specifications are unavailable, disassemble and identify system components for calculation:

1. Check the DIP switch table on the drive housing to determine the microstepping number based on the current switch positions.

2. Inspect the rotary axis structure to determine the reduction ratio (usually marked on the gearbox or timing pulley).

3. Substitute the identified parameters into the formula above to derive the theoretical Pulses Per Revolution and document it.

Step 3: Calibrate via Practical Measurement

This is the critical step to verify the theoretical value and obtain the true value.

1. Preparation:

Make a clear, visible starting mark on the rotary axis fixture.

In the laser software, set the theoretical Pulses Per Revolution obtained in Step 1 as the current parameter.

2. Perform Measurement:

Command the rotary axis to rotate a moderate number of pulses (e.g., 9000).

Precisely measure the actual rotation angle (e.g., 89.5°) using the angle measuring tool.

3. Calculation & Calibration:

Calculate the actual Pulses Per Revolution using the formula: Actual Pulses Per Revolution = (360° / Measured Rotation Angle) × Test Pulses Used

Example: Using 9000 pulses, a measured rotation of 89.5° yields an Actual Pulses Per Revolution = (360 / 89.5) × 9000 ≈ 36,201.

Update the laser control software's system parameters with the calculated actual Pulses Per Revolution.

4. Verification:

After updating the parameters, command a full rotation (360°) again and check if the starting mark returns precisely. If deviation persists, repeat Step 3 for fine-tuning.

Step 4: Documentation & Precautions

1. Record Results: Document the final calibrated value, date, and corresponding equipment ID in the equipment maintenance log.

2. Environmental Control: Calibration and testing should be performed under the equipment's normal operating temperature and load conditions.

3. Laser Parameter Check: Before testing, ensure laser focus, optical path alignment, and material flatness are in normal working condition to avoid introducing additional error.
