Line nodes cannot be linked to other nodes

Why? Line nodes won’t connect to other nodes? What is the trick? And why did the nodes on a new line turn all red?

      Connecting nodes can be problematic. So far best method I’ve found is select both sides and then alt+J

        Nodes cannot connect more than two lines. A three or four way intersection will not work.
