Earlier this month, GeoCue, a liDAR mapping hardware and software provider, announced the launch of three new products for its TrueView 3D imaging system. These new systems combine laser scanning and high-resolution imaging, including the TV625, TV680 and TV680LR. All three systems are NDAA-compliant.

All three systems are designed to be used in conjunction with drones, and the company notes that they can be adapted for a variety of industries, including surveying, construction, infrastructure management, and environmental monitoring. Each system includes RIEGL's laser scanner and three cameras to maximize its accuracy and efficiency. In the TV625, the laser scanner is RIEGL's miniUX-1UAV, while the TV680 includes the RIEGL VMUX-1UAV-22 and the TV680LR uses the RIEGL VMUX-1LR-22. For the camera, all three include three Sony IMX-183. They all include Applanix systems for positioning and orientation.

In terms of the differences between the three systems, the TV625 is the more affordable (prices are not included on GeoCue's website) and lightweight choice of the three. The accuracy of the RSME payload is within 5 cm and the weight is 2.4 kg. The TV680 and TV680LR (the latter being a remote system, as the name suggests) are twice as heavy at 4.8 kg. However, their accuracy has also been improved, with the former within 10 mm and the latter within 15 mm.

GeoCue CEO Frank Darmayan provided more information in a press statement, saying: "The TrueView 680LR is built with Riegl VUX-1LR and features a field of view of up to 360 degrees, five LiDAR echoes, and a typical accuracy of 15 mm and an accuracy of 5 mm. The 680 is integrated with the Riegl VUX-1UAV, providing unmatched 10mm measured-level accuracy and an extremely dense data set with up to 400 points per square meter at 80m flight altitude. Both systems capture highly detailed survey data, enabling our customers to generate unmatched deliverables."

In addition to these payload systems, surveyors can get additional add-ons at the time of purchase, including thumb drives, hard boxes, and GNSS antennas. Buyers also get the GeoCue Accuracy Star, a target designed specifically for drone Lidar projects, mounted on a tripod (not included). Accuracy Star enables automated vertical and horizontal accuracy checks and improvements. All of these can be combined with the LP360 and are also included in the purchase. The LP360 is a software solution for processing data collected during drone measurement projects, providing end-to-end workflows by providing payloads as well as processing software for these projects.

Not so long ago, combining high-resolution imagery with lidar in a single system, specifically designed for aerial mapping solutions, was rare. Previously, these systems were too heavy to be practical, even taking into account the advantages of combining two different but complementary data collectors. In recent years, however, the laser scanner manufacturing industry has shrunk the size of liDAR systems without sacrificing accuracy, thus opening up various solutions, such as the one GeoCue has published here. In turn, surveyors can more easily collect information data through colored dot clouds and accurate orthophoto.

Vincent Legrand, Vice President of Sales at GeoCue, said: "We offer turnkey solutions to our customers and dealers. Of course, each system includes LP360 drone software for seamless data processing and generating deliverables. Getting hardware, software, workflows, training and support from one company is a unique advantage we can offer, and we're excited about the growth that comes with it."
