Boolean operators

Trying to use a boolean operation on the heart to capture some of the larger design inside the heart while keeping only the heart shape and discarding the other. I know the objecs need to be closed and as I understand it they are - I’m not able to find any open shapes. The objects need to be closed and they appear to be but I can’t even get the boolean tool to work in any fashion. I’m not sure what I’m missing.

      Using Edit->Select open shapes reveals that the square pattern has open shapes. They were resolved easily by then doing Edit->Close Path. Then select all components of pattern and group the whole pattern. Post that, use boolean tools on heart and pattern.
