Welding shapes and Boolean operations all turn gray

For text, use the Weld button in the text dialog. See highlighted area in image. For Boolean to work, it needs to be converted to a path, then it is no longer editable text.

With Welded selected when reducing the horizontal HSpace the text auto-welds and remains editable.
