Modifying individual letters within a word

how do I select just one letter within a word or sentence that I’ve typed in order to modify and change just that one letter without selecting the whole word. can’t seem to find a way to separate and select one letter in order to tweak it.

      2 approaches:
convert text to path by selecting text and then Edit->Convert to path
create each letter of the word as a separate object and position manually
